Well, it seems that the report of the death of the Wilkins Ice Shelf was an exaggeration. What the spanish scientists saw was the breaking up of the melange west of the Wilkins. You can see the updated news

A melange is a mixture of sea ice and glaciers that stick together thanx to the sea ice. It tends to be much weaker than the ice shelf but sometimes it can last for decades.
