La Madrugá - Holy Week, Seville

I've spent this Easter in Seville, visiting my sister and La Semana Santa sevillana (quite famous in Spain)

There are a lot of religious parades and the city is full of life during the week. Spanish religious parades during Easter are colourful and a bit odd, at least for foreigners... :-) You can take a look to some info and pics.

Below you will find some pics that I took in the Madrugá (Early morning in sevillian dialect) It goes from Thursday night to Friday morning and during that night the city is full of parades, people walking around the city (and this being

A visit to the Mohon del Trigo Observatory

This abandoned observatory is visible from the University Mountain Refuge and after seeing it day after day I had to pay it a visit...

An earthquake hits L'Aquila

It looks pretty ugly and there are several dozen dead people... I've been there (or nearby) several times as it is the closest city to Il Gran Sasso so I'm a bit sad right now.

I'm also a bit angry as the amount of deaths probably is related to the quality of italian building codes (and its implementation)   Although I will have to wait before I start complaining. Kobe earthquake was 7.3 that is 10 times bigger than this earthquake (this was 6.3) and over 6000 people died, so maybe the buildings behaved properly.

Let my prays go with them

Wilkins collapse aftermath

Well wilkins keeps breaking away from Antarctica and the workd has started to notice. Several newspaper have already posted the news. The one I prefer is El Pais. It was one of the first and has some of the best images.

The reason behind it is that I told them the news as soon as it broke off and told them where they could get the images. The reason I did it is that in mid February they really blew it announcing that the Wilkins had broken away. I had to endure a week of "politeness" about the mistake of the spanish newspaper and decided to give them a hand next time. (Of course they waited for Reuters to confirm it :-D)

Well if you want to see one of the firsts and one of the bests (till now) news pieces about the Wilkins collapse take a look at EL PAIS  (sorry, in spanish)

Meanwhile you can take a look to the last image (not yet available to the general public) You can see the slow collapse of the ice bridge and the new rifts that are appearing in the main ice shelf. It really looks we will get a big breakup

Wilkins starts its voyage

Well now it's for real. The breakup of Wilkins has started. Yesterday ESA announced that the breakup was inminent and it seems that it was not only because Easter was near and they wanted to go on holydays :-)

Images from today show the ice shelf breaking.  Below you have the last images (the last one only available here!)

If you don't understand what's going on you can take a look to The unofficial Wilkins Ice Shelf Spacecam and to the  introduction about the Wilkins Ice Shelf

Last seven days

It makes me feel a bit sad. It's been one of the projects I have worked in my last stay in ESA and it's nice that at the end it has proved useful. But on the other hand I've been looking to this Ice Shelf for six months almost everyday and it was starting to feel familiar to me. I had dreamt of visiting it someday. Well, now it's gone and I will never see Charcot Island from the ice bridge...
